Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Donor Advised Fund? Why choose to donate through a Donor Advised fund?
A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) offers donors a tax-efficient and personalized way to give to charitable organizations you care about. It allows donors to put money into the fund and receive a tax deduction for that contribution. Donors can then recommend grants from the donor advised fund to different nonprofits whenever they choose – essentially, they donate to the fund and claim the deduction upfront but decide later and how to distribute the charitable funds. This gives donors the benefits of charitable giving without the hassle of collecting tax receipts.
Why choose BKO for your Donor Advised Fund?
BKO is committed to giving back to nonprofits in Brooklyn. When you choose to make a grant through BKO, you will receive tailored and expert advice from our team. We work closely with our donors to ensure they are giving in a way that aligns with their personal values and helps them achieve a meaningful giving experience. Additionally, BKO is distinguished from commercial Donor Advised Fund providers because BKO’s fund fees are reinvested into local Brooklyn nonprofits, maximizing your impact.
What types of assets can I contribute to my Donor Advised Fund?
You can contribute both cash and marketable securities (such as stocks and bonds) to your Donor Advised Fund. Other assets (such as illiquid investments) may be considered on a case by case basis.
I already have a fund with another organization. Can I transfer it to BKO?
Yes, you can transfer existing funds from another provider to BKO. Here’s how:
- Open a Donor Advised Fund at Brooklyn Org
- Recommend a grant from your existing DAF to Brooklyn Org
- Allocate those funds to your new DAF
You can transfer as much or as little of your existing DAF as you’d like.
Many donors choose to:
- Move a portion of their fund to test the experience
- Keep multiple DAFs for different giving strategies
- Gradually transition their philanthropy to a community foundation

I really appreciate that Brooklyn Org is supporting small organizations that are so close to the needs of their community but might not have the same resources for fundraising as bigger organizations. I have been an admired of Brooklyn Org’s trust-based approach to philanthropy and its responsiveness to community needs for a while, so I’m really happy to have a way to support them with my DAF.Dana Archer-Rosenthal
