This grant is part of the Neighborhood Collective Impact Project, which provides funding to address concerns raised during Brooklyn Org’s annual Listening Tours.
Nonprofit Partners: Red Hook Art Project (RHAP) and the Red Hook Justice Center
“Creative Conversations: Art and Dialogue for Racial Justice” is a collaboration between Red Hook Art Project (RHAP) and the Red Hook Justice Center to engage youth in creating zines focused on racial justice, community safety, and systemic racism. Through workshops, RHAP students and youth from the Justice Center will design and produce zines that combine art, stories, and educational content about racial justice. The zines will be distributed at local events and community centers, culminating in a public event where youth present their work and engage in discussions about the issues explored in the zines.
Conducts grassroots labor organizing to support the rights of street vendors—NYC’s smallest small businesses—using public education, business and leadership development, legislative advocacy, and direct legal support to expand vending as a viable, lawful employment option for immigrants and other entrepreneurs
Founded in Brooklyn in 2019, S.T.O.P. protects civil rights by confronting the expansion of discriminatory surveillance technologies, like facial recognition tools, that threaten privacy and deepen racial and religious profiling of overpoliced communities. As a leading advocacy organization and legal services provider, S.T.O.P pairs community-led digital safety trainings with litigation, research, and policy advocacy to equip communities across Brooklyn and beyond with tools to protect their rights and drive systemic change.
Combats income-based housing discrimination with tenant-led tech tools, direct advocacy, and data analysis that hold landlords accountable and promote the rights of low-income voucher holders.
Builds power among low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS, the drug war, mass incarceration, and homelessness through community organizing, leadership development, policy advocacy, direct services, and research.
Provides free civil legal services and a citywide pro bono network, helping low-income older adults in Brooklyn plan for their medical and financial futures and navigate systems that often exclude them.
Provides therapy, case management, court advocacy, and restorative justice circles as well as everyday needs like groceries, haircuts, and daily-living support in a trusted drop-in space for young men affected by gun violence and incarceration.
