How DAFs Are Growing Our New Model for Community Philanthropy
Hundreds of Brooklynites came out on April 25 to brave the rain and spread sunshine for the borough’s biggest day of service, Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day. Community members from all corners of Brooklyn laced up their boots, grabbed their gloves, and headed out to work side-by-side with the nonprofits that quietly, tirelessly keep this borough running. From Sunset Park to Red Hook, from Bushwick to Bay Ridge — the borough was buzzing with purpose.
Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day is about more than getting things done (though a tremendous amount does get done). It’s about connection, showing up for your neighbors, and learning firsthand what the organizations in your community are doing every single day. A heartfelt thank you to this year’s sponsors, Bennett Midland LLC and Amalgamated Bank, whose support makes a day of service at this scale possible.
Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day takes on special meaning this year. The nonprofits you showed up for are doing essential work at a moment when Brooklyn families need it most: navigating federal funding cuts, rising costs, and surging demand for services.
That’s the driving force behind our Brooklyn Backs Brooklyn campaign to raise $5 million and expand our strategic grantmaking by 25%, which will allow us to direct more resources to the frontline nonprofits Brooklynites depend on. Your presence on Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day is one powerful form of backing them, but you can make your impact go even further with a gift to support this work.
Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day is one day, but the nonprofits you worked alongside show up 365 days a year, running food pantries, protecting families’ rights, supporting immigrants, and keeping our communities strong. When you give to Brooklyn Org, you’ll be backing organizations that reach our most vulnerable neighbors across the borough. Give today to see what’s possible when Brooklyn Backs Brooklyn.
Volunteers had dozens of opportunities to get involved, with service activities for every age, interest, and neighborhood. At Mixteca, volunteers helped run Mercadito Solidario — the organization’s weekly outdoor market bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to Brooklyn’s Mexican and Latin American immigrant community. At The Campaign Against Hunger, volunteers packed over 1,000 pantry grocery bags bound for TCAH’s satellite pantries and school programs across the city. Volunteers got some fresh air while they worked alongside the Fort Greene Park Conservancy and YVote to clean up areas for planting in the park. In Bed-Stuy, The B.R.O. Experience Foundation — a 2026 Brooklyn Org Spark Prize winner — welcomed volunteers to paint a mural and pack hygiene kits for the young men in their program. And at Asiyah Women’s Center, another 2026 Brooklyn Org Spark Prize winner, volunteers helped staff a free store providing clothing and essential goods for survivors of domestic violence.
Thank you to every volunteer who braved the rain and showed up anyway. And thank you to the nonprofits who trusted the community to be there. You do this work every week, every month, every year — Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day is one small way to say: we see you, we’re grateful, and we’ve got your back. Brooklyn backs Brooklyn.
