Watch: How BKO’s New Funding Will Protect Brooklyn Families And Civil Liberties

The belief in the power of neighbors helping neighbors is the driving force behind our Brooklyn Backs Brooklyn campaign, which we launched last summer in response to federal funding cuts, escalating immigration enforcement, and restrictions on programs serving marginalized communities.

This week, Brooklyn Org announced the first round of grants from the campaign, awarding nearly $500,000 to 12 nonprofits working to protect families and protect rights in Brooklyn communities, and hosted a conversation with three of these BKO partners working at the frontlines of today’s most urgent challenges. Our President & CEO Dr. Jocelynne Rainey was joined in discussion by:

  • Murad Awawdeh, New York Immigration Coalition — addressing the rapid escalation of immigration enforcement and legal vulnerabilities facing immigrant communities.
  • Coleen Stevens Porcher, Power of Two — supporting mothers and families confronting food insecurity and economic instability.
  • Mohammad Razvi, Council of Peoples Organization — advocating for and supporting refugee and immigrant communities facing compounding policy impacts.

Our goal is ambitious: to raise $5 million over the course of the year to be able to expand our community grantmaking by 25%. We are halfway to that goal thanks to the generosity of so many Brooklynites stepping up for our communities. These grants are only possible because of our community’s additional support. We are continuing to fundraise so that we can do even more grantmaking to protect our neighbors — join us to show what happens when Brooklyn Backs Brooklyn.
