The Kaye Family Charitable Fund
The Kaye Family Charitable Fund was created in memory of Jonathan (“Jon”) Scott Kaye who passed away at the age of 52 on March 11, 2014. A graduate of Brooklyn Law School, Jon spent 17 years as a prosecutor with the Kings County District Attorney’s office, one of the largest and busiest prosecutor’s offices in the nation, serving over 2 million residents of Brooklyn. Jon was responsible for trying some of the office’s most complex and high-profile cases, first with the Domestic Violence bureau, and most recently in the Homicide Bureau.
Born on Feb. 25, 1962, in New Hyde Park, N.Y. to Phyllis and Robert Paul Kaye, Jon and his brothers, Michael Ian Kaye and Jeffrey Stuart Kaye, grew up in several cities across the nation, graduating from Ballard High School in Louisville, KY. He attended Purdue University where he served on the Purdue Student Concert Committee and as a reporter for the student paper, The Exponent. It was in the Exponent newsroom that Jon met Joyce Rutter who would later become his wife.
Jon’s love of music drove him to move to New York after graduating where he worked at CBS Fox and attended as many concerts, from Yo La Tengo to Led Zeppelin, as possible. Inspired by his father in law, Thomas M. Rutter Jr., Jon pursued a law degree, graduating from Brooklyn Law School in 1997. Jon was a skillful trial lawyer known for his immense compassion. Just weeks before his death, Jon recalled meeting with the mother of a victim after a trial, and taking her to see the places in Manhattan that were meaningful to her son.
Jon passed away from complications of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The Kaye Family Charitable Fund was created to honor his memory and fulfill his wish to support programs benefiting low-income youths from underserved communities in New York City.
