On October 14, more than 200 young Brooklynites joined us at NYU Tandon for our Brooklyn Energy Careers Summit. Over the evening they explored career pathways, connected with industry leaders, and learned about opportunities in the growing energy economy.

Two perspectives, one goal

Our panels brought together two important perspectives. First, leaders working to build Brooklyn’s energy workforce: Gregory J. Morris of the NYC Employment and Training Coalition, Dr. Dharik Mallapragada of NYU Tandon, Clare Newman of the Trust for Governors Island, and Brooklyn Org President & CEO Dr. Jocelynne Rainey. Second, young people navigating their own paths into the industry: Meagan Acevedo of RETI Center, and Karim Couser of Welder Underground.

We heard about the growing demand for skilled workers, the barriers to accessing opportunities, and the importance of training, mentorship and connections. Hearing directly from Brooklynites who are already building careers in energy was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when talent meets opportunity.

Connecting with opportunity

After the panels, attendees met with local organizations offering training and career programs in energy: Green City Force, The HOPE Program, National Grid, RETI Center, UPROSE and Welder Underground. Drive Change and Kindred Bakery BK, two organizations creating career pathways for young people, kept everyone fueled with food and sweets.

Thank you

A huge thank you to our partners at National Grid Foundation and our host NYU Tandon, our panelists, and participating organizations for helping us bring these conversations to life.

Brooklyn’s energy future should be built by Brooklynites!
