Brooklyn Volunteer Day Is April 13th!

This Spring, we’re proud to offer the first annual Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day on Saturday, April 13th! Join Brooklyn Org and our community partners across the borough to give back to the place that’s given us all so much.

Registration for the Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day is powered by our partners at The Service Collective.

We’re hosting six different family-friendly volunteer sites across Brooklyn, including opportunities open to all ages:

Food Distribution With Mixteca | 9:15 am - 11:30 am | Ages 12+

Age requirements: Ages 16+ years ok w/o guardian, 12-15 years guardian required. No volunteers under 12 years old

Location: Mixteca, 245 23rd St, Brooklyn, NY, 11215

Assist Brooklyn Org with Mixteca’s weekly food distribution, Mercadito Solidario.

Mercadito Solidario provides our community with fresh nutritious foods such as: fruits and vegetables, including jalapeños, tomatillos, tortillas, plants and herbs, that oftentimes are only found in our communities home countries.

Volunteers will be tasked with helping us to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to our community members. Skills would include: customer service, lifting boxes, setting up the market (setting up tables, small tents, setting up food boxes), cleaning up (assisting with trash, recycling), breaking down after the market is over.

Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to join this event, but not required.

About Mixteca

Mixteca’s mission is to address critical needs in health, education, social and legal issues facing the burgeoning Mexican and Latin American immigrant community in Brooklyn.

Community Cleanup With KAVI | 11 am - 1 pm | Ages 10+

Age requirements: Ages 16+ may join without guardian, 10-15 years old guardian required. No children under 10 years

Location: Wyckoff Community Center, 280 Wyckoff St, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Join Brooklyn Org and youth and staff from Kings Against Violence Initiative for an impactful community clean up at Wyckoff Gardens and the Gowanus Houses. This beautification project will kick off at the Wyckoff Community Center and spread out over the surrounding area.

Tasks will include picking up trash and planting around the area. Your work will make an immediate impact in the neighborhood and help engage residents and youth in the community.

About Kings Against Violence Initiative, Inc

Youth-serving organization with a mission to prevent and eliminate interpersonal violence from the lives of young people through advocacy, peer leadership, community mobilization, and social justice.

Urban Farming With Wyckoff House Museum | 11 am - 3 pm | Ages 5+

Age requirements: Ages 14+ may join without guardian, ages 5 – 14 guardian required. No volunteers under 5 permitted.

Location: Wyckoff House Museum & Garden, 5816 Clarendon Road, Brooklyn, NY, 11203

Volunteer with Brooklyn Org at Wyckoff House Museum’s urban farm to help processing food scraps and compost and get ready for spring with a general garden clean up.

No special skills required, but it’s recommended volunteers dress with layers in clothing suitable for outdoor work, durable boots or sneakers, bring a refillable water bottle, and snacks.

Tasks can be physically strenuous, and can include weeding, mulching, turning compost, or harvesting, depending on the needs of the farm that day.

About Wyckoff House Museum

Primary mission is to preserve, interpret, and operate New York’s oldest building and the surrounding one-and-a-half acres of park. Through innovative educational and farm-based programs we build cultural and agricultural connections within our community, emphasizing immigration, family, food, and community.

Sort Recycling With Sure We Can | 12 pm - 2 pm | All Ages

Age requirements: All Ages! 14+ can join w/o guardian. Under 14 years guardian required.

Location: Sure We Can, 219 McKibbin St, Brooklyn, NY 11206

Join Brooklyn Org to learn from Sure We Can staff and community members about the day-to-day work of bottle and can collecting and sorting. Volunteers will participate in sorting materials that will then be directly recycled! No particular special skills are required, just a willingness to get a little dirty and to help us dig through the valuable materials that others throw away!

About Sure We Can

Founded in 2007 to provide canners–people who collect cans and bottles from the streets–a welcoming place to redeem and connect with others engaged in the same work. Swc is the only non-profit directly serving canners in New York.

Serve At CHiPS Soup Kitchen | 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm | Ages 12+

Age requirements: Ages 12+ without guardian. No volunteers 12 or under.

Location: CHiPS, 200 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Join us at the TSC Treat Stand! Lunch guests at the CHiPS soup kitchen on 4th Avenue love to get something a bit extra with their meal, especially the warm greetings and smiles from our youth volunteers.

Volunteers will be asked to bake at home or buy hearty snacks and bring them to serve at our treat stand. Each volunteer is required to bring enough food to feed 50 guests. Some favorite treats include bags of fruit, trail mix, banana bread, muffins, cookies, granola bars. We will also have water and coffee.

Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to sign up, but not a requirement.

About CHiPS

Based in the Park Slope/Gowanus community of Brooklyn, the mission of CHiPS is two fold: to eliminate food insecurity and homelessness in New York City.

Beautification Of Bensonhurst Park With United Chinese Association of Brooklyn | 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm | All Ages

Age requirements: All Ages Welcome! Ages 15+ may join without guardian. Under 15 years guardian required

Location: Bensonhurst Park, Cropsey Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11214

Join Brooklyn Org and United Chinese Association of Brooklyn and pitch in to clean up a beloved neighborhood green space, Bensonurst Park. NYC Parks personnel will be on site to guide the clean up and provide the necessary tools and safety gear.

This is a great opportunity for families to give back and engage with their communities, as well as make new connections with other fellow volunteers.

Bilingual English/Chinese speakers are strongly encouraged to join this event, but not required.

Registration for the Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day is powered by our partners at The Service Collective.

Please sign up in advance for the activity you’d like to join so we know how many people to expect. Getting started is simple:

  1. Create a free volunteer account at theservicecollective.org/login (signing up takes less than 2 minutes!)
  2. Browse our volunteer opportunities at theservicecollective.org/#volunteer-section
  3. Choose the activity (or activities) you’d like to take part in. You can register for yourself and as many kids or family members you’d like.

Once you sign up, you’ll receive two emails: a registration confirmation, and a request to fill out your profile and sign a first-time volunteering waiver. Volunteers will receive further information and instructions two days before the event, and a reminder email one day before.
