Brooklyn Org Awards $250,000 to 38 Grassroots Organizations Across the Borough

Brooklyn Org (BKO) today announced the first recipients of its new Brooklyn Org Microgrants program, awarding funding to 38 community-based organizations across the borough. The program provides general operating support grants of up to $10,000 to neighborhood-based nonprofits and grassroots groups with annual budgets under $100,000—organizations that are often deeply embedded in their communities but face barriers accessing traditional philanthropic funding.

The microgrants are designed to strengthen Brooklyn’s nonprofit ecosystem, ensuring that community leaders and volunteers closest to local challenges have the resources they need to sustain and grow their work. This initiative is part of Brooklyn Org’s broader strategy to reduce barriers to funding for local nonprofits and expand donor-supported grantmaking investments throughout the borough where they are needed most. This grantee cohort is bolstered through the additional support of Congregational Home Legacy Fund at Brooklyn Org and Constance Christensen.

“Often the most powerful ideas and solutions come from the smallest organizations – neighbors supporting neighbors and responding directly to what their communities need,” said Dr. Jocelynne Rainey, President and CEO of Brooklyn Org. “Through our Microgrants program, we are proud to invest in these grassroots leaders who are building community power and delivering critical services across Brooklyn.”

Brooklyn Org’s microgrants distribution reflects a broader commitment to supporting organizations of all sizes across the borough. While Brooklyn Org’s Strategic Grants program provides multi-year support to nonprofits with budgets above $100,000, microgrants are designed to fill a crucial funding gap for smaller organizations and volunteer-led initiatives. Brooklyn Org also produces the annual Brooklyn Org Spark Prize, which awards $100,000 to five nonprofits, and its Neighborhood Collective Impact grants provide $25,000 to support collaborative projects involving nonprofit partners working on a shared local issue.

Recipients of this grant cycle include grassroots groups working with immigrant families, survivors of violence, youth, artists, and historically underserved communities.

Brooklyn Org accepts microgrant applications on a rolling basis, with funding decisions announced twice annually. Eligible organizations must be Brooklyn-based or actively working in the borough, have budgets under $100,000, and hold 501(c)(3) status or operate under a fiscal sponsor.
