Our borough is home to bold ideas, innovation, and unrivaled artistic expression—at Brooklyn Org, we believe that every Brooklynite deserves to experience and contribute to Brooklyn’s rich creative and cultural landscape, and that includes having access to ideas, books, and reading.

This Banned Books Week, consider our brief checklist to support open access to information and freedom of expression:

1      Read a banned book set in Brooklyn

Explore local works that have been banned or challenged, like A Tree Grows In Brooklyn (Betty Smith), Leaves of Grass (Walt Whitman), or Girl In Translation (Jean Kwok)—check them our at one of Brooklyn Public Library’s 62 branches across the borough or online!

2      Return to local solutions

Learn about organizations in the borough that are working to expand childhood literacy and access to books, like our grantee partners at Brooklyn Book Bodega.

3    Hold yourself accountable for making your voice heard

Call your elected officials, join a community board, volunteer, or attend one of Brooklyn Org’s community forums—our next in the series is on October 20 at Brooklyn College, RSVP here or below—to engage with your neighbors around issues like education, youth, and freedom of speech.
