Patch: Nonprofits: Time To Apply To Brooklyn Org’s Giving Tuesday Fundraiser
Published in Patch
The Brooklyn Gives fundraiser — the one that raised more than one million dollars for local non-profits last Giving Tuesday — is back for another year, and there is still one week left for nonprofits to apply to join the initiative.
Brooklyn Gives, hosted by Brooklyn Org, provides local nonprofits with an online platform to fundraise on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, known as Giving Tuesday.
The online platform functions as a database where users can search by interest and location to find local non-profits that work on causes they care about.
From there, users can learn more about each non-profit, compile a list of places they’d like to donate to and then make a contribution directly through the Brooklyn Gives site.
Last year, 178 non-profits participated in the fundraiser, and this year, Brooklyn Org is aiming for 200.
So far, the foundation has 158 registered nonprofits for the 2024 season, including favorites like the free books program Brooklyn Book Bodega, and Groundswell, the Brooklyn community mural project.
“The turbulence and distress of the election season should serve as a call to action for Brooklynites to make change where it matters most: right here at home,” Jocelynne Rainey, the president and CEO of Brooklyn Org, said.
Giving Tuesday, the more charitable cousin of Cyber Monday and Black Friday, is a day where people are encouraged to support the nonprofits that serve as the backbones of their communities. It was started in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, and has since spread all over the country.
“Brooklyn Gives on Giving Tuesday is a great opportunity for our amazing grassroots nonprofits to get more exposure and reach new supporters,” Rainey said.
Last year, more than 4,000 people donated to a nonprofit through the Brooklyn Gives database, the foundation said.
Giving Tuesday is on Dec. 3 this year, but there will be a fundraising push from Brooklyn Org beginning on Nov. 12.
Nonprofits have until Nov. 12 to sign up.
