Barry Cooper, founder of the B.R.O. Experience Foundation, talked about starting the nonprofit in 2020 to provide healing spaces for young men of color.

He says the B.R.O. Experience uses cognitive behavior therapy to help young men regulate their emotions and make positive decisions.

Cooper described the challenges he’s faced, but also said the organization has grown significantly, with over 19 staff members who served over 200 young men in 2025.

As a Black nonprofit leader, he says he aims to support over 2 million young men and create a holistic wellness center for men of color.

Cooper recently won the Brooklyn Org Change Maker award and the David Prize, which provided $200,000 to further his work.
